Zakumi: Official Mascot for the 2010 Word Cup

October 27, 2008

Just like in previous World Cup events, official mascots had been a traditional part of this prominent soccer tournament. Organizers of the upcoming event revealed the mascot named Zakumi. It has been chosen as the official mascot for the 2010 World Cup which will be hosted by South Africa.

The design of Zakumi was made by Andries Odendaal from Cape Town. The costume was made by Cora Simpson of Cora’s Costumes located in Boksburg.

Zakumi is a young leopard which serves as a symbol of being smart, young, energetic, ambitious and a true inspiration for everyone. The word Za stands for South Africa, kumi stands for 10 which is the number of languages used all over Africa.

CEO Danny Jordaan, the head of the organizing committee for the 2010 World Cup confirmed that the mascot’s birthday is 18th of June 1994 which is also the year when Africa achieved its democracy.

Being chosen as the host for the World Cup will bring glory of the African nation and will hopefully help to uplift the level of the sport soccer to the many African fans. It will be very big event in the history of South Africa.
