USA Men’s Soccer

23The United States men’s national soccer team stands for the U.S. in international soccer competition and is managed by the US Soccer Federation.  Despite soccer not traditionally a high profile game in American sport, it has steadily increased its popularity starting in the 70s.  The team is, ranked 14 in the world according to the FIFA World Rankings.  It took part in the last five FIFA World Cups and will join in South Africa for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

In 1885, Canada and the United States played the first international match held not in the United Kingdom.  It was played in Newark, New Jersey where Canada defeated the U.S. 1–0.  The following year, The United States defeated Canada with the same score and in the same place.   After thirty years, the United States played versus Sweden its first official international match under U.S. Soccer in Sweden, Stockholm where the U.S. won 2-3.
