Underachievers no more!- Russia whipped by Spain

June 10, 2008

Inspired by a superb hat-trick from the skillful David Villa, Spain made their intentions clear to all other favorites in Euro 2008. “We are here, we will conquer” these are the words spoken by there thrashing of what was said to be an air-tight Russian defense. But a score line reading 4-1 in favor of the Aragones’ men who had all sorts of critics, is not reflective of an air-tight defense by any means.

With Torres, Villa, Iniesta, Fabregas, four of the most exciting young players in world soccer playing at the top of their game, the potency of Spain’s attack is venomous and who can argue with Coach Aragones for the omission of veteran striker Raul, with Spain at the top of their game?

The Spanish have certainly made tremours move through the Euro with a scintillating all-round team performance and quite possibly struck fear to the changing rooms of their next opponents who they will face in four days time. But could this be the case of a “one hit wonder” by a Spanish team who have demonstrated on many ocassions, this same start only to be given the antidote of defeat by a team that on paper they should beat easily and with their past performance should good very well against?

The Spanish have certainly answered their critics with an excellent display on the day when it really mattered. Well done Cesc Fabregas, who got the other goal for Spain, you may yet get your chance to avenge the defeat by Zidane and France in the knock stages of world cup 2006.
