Portsmouth vs Liverpool

December 21, 2009 by Richard · Leave a Comment

361A head to head match between two of the troubled teams of the Premier League’s will play in the first match of the weekend.  It is Liverpool taking a trip down to cellar dweller Portsmouth.  The Hampshire fell to Chelsea in midweek.  But it was a much better showing as Avram Grant watched his old charge Frank Lampard concludes the match with a second-half penalty.
Yet Pompey remained steady with only 11 points to their name, so they should get something when Rafael Benitez’s Reds come to town.  The Anfield giants desperately need a win on Wednesday, triumphing 2-1 over Wigan Athletic in spite of failing to take full gain of their many goal-scoring chances.  But Liverpool is still a long shot from where they hope to be at this point of the season.  But still the Champions League qualification is a must for the 18-time English champions, and if they are to achieve that goal they should win against the cellar dwellers.

There were scoring chances for Portsmouth but Michael Carrick sealed the three points with a forward volley from able midfielder Paul Scholes.

Pompeys fire their manager

February 9, 2009 by Tulsi · Leave a Comment

tonyadams2_1863987Portsmouth manager, Tony Adams is axed following a loss to Liverpool on Saturday night.  He took charge of the club when Harry Redknapp left the club for Tottenham Hotspurs. Pompeys failed to win a single match in the last nine games and that’s what made the club fire him.

Saturday’s match against Reds could have helped the manager to retain his job had Benitez not brought on Torres and Kuyt from the bench. The Pompeys were playing really well and they were 2-1 up when Kuyt, Torres and Alonso were brought to rescue the club from the loss.

Although, Portsmouth was playing really well but only managed draws when they played good. They brought Peter Crouch from Liverpool at the start of the season who was playing really well for them and also scoring goals. Pompeys are now without a manager. The club is thankful to his services but they had to think when the club was just 1 point away from relegation zone.

erik-nevland-andy-johnson_1856857Fulham came up with yet another fabulous performance has they managed to frustrate Portsmouth to another loss with 3 goals on Saturday evening.

The visitors were forced to make errors again and again by the cottagers. fulham moved up to ninth spot above Manchester city in the premier league table.  one goal from Johnson was not enough to inspire the pompeys to come back when nevland came up with two superb goals as they were 3-0 till 80 minutes. It was then Nugent who gained the visitors some respect with one goal to finish the game 3-1.

Although David James, the Pompey keeper did very with the gloves to kep the cottagers away from goal but it was nevland’s show that made james useless in the end. Nevland gained a well deserved man of the match at the end. Pompeys now moved to the 15th spot in the league table not good enough for them.  Also the pompeys were denied  a well deserved penalty that could have changed the result of the game.

Portsmouth 0-1 Aston Villa

January 28, 2009 by Qasim · Leave a Comment

Aston Villa beat Portsmouth thanks to a goal on debut from Emile Heskey to move into 3rd place in the Premier League.

Heskey scored after a flick-on from Gabriel Agbonlahor from Brad Freidel’s long clearance on 21 minutes to give Villa a fourth consecutive win. Portsmouth on the other hand, are winl-ess in 7, and have won only 2 out of 14 games under manager Tony Adams.

Villa came into the game in fine form, and although they were never truly in command, they did enough to see off Portsmouth, who were spurred on by a boisterous home crowd. The home side created a few chances, as new signings Jermain Pennant and Hayden Mullins combined well, but Peter Crouch was guilty of a glaring miss from inside the box and Pompey clearly missed the pace and finishing prowess of Jermain Defoe, who was sold off to Spurs last week.

In the second half, Portsouth suffered another setback when Nadir Belhadj was sent off after a second booking.Villa held on for another win, and the dream of Champions League football next season is looking more and more possible.

Pennant to Portsmouth

January 17, 2009 by Tulsi · Leave a Comment

31338pennantPennant has been highly linked for a transfer move to Real Madrid and AC Milan but now the deal has been almost done with the Pompeys. Portsmouth purchased Peter Crouch at the start of the season and now they are buying Jermaine Pennant. The right winger has been on the sidelines for Liverpool for most of the season. He got few starts where he played really well. With the arrival of Keane, Kuyt had to take the role of right winger. With so many good players on the bench such as El Zhar, Benayoun and Babel, Pennant had no chance of getting a regular place in the side. The manager Benitez has confirmed that the player is leaving for Portsmouth but he has denied the transfer requests for the highly rated centre-back Daniel Agger. Pennant was transferred from Arsenal to Liverpool. Now he is heading to Portsmouth with a vast experience so he might just click for the Pompeys.
