Soccer Leagues: Major League Soccer

July 2, 2008 by Esmalagu · Leave a Comment

Soccer leagues had been around in this sport. Leagues had been organized to govern and form teams to represent the league. Leagues are responsible in seeking for sponsors to support the needs of the team.

One of the most prominent and successful soccer leagues is the Major League Soccer or MLS. This is a league with elite members of professional soccer players. It has already 13 teams in the United States and one team in Canada.

The MLS was founded on December 17, 1993. The MLS is single entity organization which controls the teams. Revenues earned are shared to the entire league and contracts of its players are negotiated by the league.

In its effort to improve the system of soccer, MLS experiments some changes with the rules of the game. One of this is the use of a countdown clock instead of the traditional progressive clock. When the clock reached 0:00, it signals the end of the halves. But in spite of efforts by the league to deviate some of the rules, many traditional fans are not comfortable with the rules. As a result, some of the revised rules had been eliminated, however some has been adopted.

With the continued effort of the league to create more teams, it has expanded its membership all through at the country. It has gained support from different big companies and later on inked them with a sponsorship contract. The league aims to organize more teams in the future and will continue the development of its members.
