Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has called upon his players to return to winning ways against Wigan, as they look to keep their title hopes alive.

The Reds have drawn their last 3 games, and have conceded the advantage to Manchester United, who are now top of the table.

“Clearly we have to win games,” Benitez told the media today.

“Not just now, always – when you are towards the top of the table every single game is important. But I think we showed the other day against Everton that we were much better.

“We had a lot of confidence, we had a lot of possession and we had control of the game. If we keep playing this way then I am sure that we will win games.

“This is an opportunity for us. We are playing away with the same confidence we had the other day and now we just have to make sure we take the chances that we create.”

He remains confident that his team are capable of turning their fortunes around and winning the Premier League this season: “You can see in training sessions that the players are very confident that we can do important things this year.”

32919_newsIn the past one month we have seen war of words between Manchester United boss, Sir Alex Ferguson and Liverpool boss, Rafael Benitez on several issues. United and Liverpool are recognized for sharing the most bitter relation in Premier League. Benitez accused United of favorable fixtures this year.

He accused him last year too but no one supported his claim. This year finally Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager has stood up to supports the Reds boss claim. He has said that it is quite apparent if you see the next ten matches United is facing from next week. It is unfair to the rest of the title contenders but we can’t do anything. The people to be blamed are those who make the schedule. We can’t accuse the Red Devils for it but issue should certainly be raised. Although Mourinho would not agree on this with the Reds boss but Rafa would be satisfied with Wenger’s comments.

steven-gerrard_1806047Steven Gerrard who appeared in court on Friday for the bar brawl has full support of the club manager Rafael Benitez.

The manager has said that he is unaffected by the incident as he is innocent. He said that you can see his performance which is consistent before and after the incident. If he really did something wrong he would have lost the momentum. Besides what players do off the pitch is not of their concern when they come on the field. Gerrard is in superb form.

He has scored 9 goals for the team in the premieqr league season and more goals are still to come from the Reds skipper. He struck a ferocious strike at Anfield last weekend and his class is permanent. Gerrard has denied the charges and he is out on bail. The team is supporting the Reds starlet and so are the fans. All he needs to do is to focus on the game.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has called on his players to return to their earlier form, when they were top of the table. Consecutive draws against Stoke and Everton mean Liverpool are now behind Manchester United on goal difference, having played a game extra. Before these games, Liverpool had been in fine form, brushing aside Newcastle United 5-1.

“On that day [versus Newcastle] we scored a lot of goals, created a lot of chances and played some good football so clearly we are looking for this kind of performance in every kind of game,” he told the club’s official website. If we can play as well as we did against Newcastle then I am sure that we can win a lot of games.”

He continued: “I think that game was really good because we passed the ball well and kept the ball well, there were a lot of positives. That is the idea of how we want to play.”

He also spoke about the return of star striker Fernando Torres: “I was impressed with him on Monday. It is not easy to play in a derby when it is so intense. He was exhausted at the end, but he did well.

“He is very close to full fitness, so now it’s just about getting match fitness. To do that, he needs to play games and be in front of the goal a few times. That’s the key.

“The more chances you get, the more likely you are to start scoring goals. Hopefully he can score this weekend and get that confidence.”
