Premier Soccer League is the trading name of the National Soccer League of South Africa. It is also known by its initials PSL. The ABSA Premiership is the premier league that is sponsored by ABSA. The second highest league is the National First Division which is divided into two regions. The current CEO of the PSL is Kjetil Siem, a Norwegian who succeeded Trevor Phillips, an Englishman after the 2006-07 season. Johannesburgn is the location of the PSL’s headquarters. The PSL was founded by Jomo Sono, Raymond Hack, Irvin Khoza and Kaizer Motaung in 1996.
The Manning Rangers were the first champions of the PSL in 1997 when Gordon Igesund coached and stunned all by winning the title of all its opponents. From 1998 to 2000 the league was conquered by Sundowns. In 2001, Igesund transferred to Orlando Pirates and helped the Buccaneers get the title. The next season he shifted to Santos a Cape Town base and guided it to victory, thus making him the first coach to win the championship with three different teams.
