Inter to turn to Alonso as Lampard remains uncertain

July 19, 2008

Inter Milan are poised to turn their attentions to Liverpool’s midfielder Xabi Alonso as the proposed transfer of Chelsea’s Frank Lampard has come to a dead end. Even though the Chelsea midfielder has agreed to the terms with the Nerazzurri, which would see him linking up with former Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho; Chelsea’s chief executive, Peter Kenyon, remains adamant that the England international will stay at the club for at least another season.

The situation with Chelsea and Lampard seems to be an ongoing saga and Mourinho’s urgent quest for a central midfielder has forced him to turn his attention to Liverpool’s Xavi Alonso.

Liverpool’s manager Rafa Benitez is currently working on a move for Aston Villa’s Gareth Barry, and the former Valencia head coach has made clear his intentions to allow Alonso to leave Anfield pending the acquisition of a replacement.

The Spanish international who won the Euros with Spain was slated to join Juventus but the deal reportedly fell through due to failure to agree on a fee.
