The Underdogs vs the favorites

The Turks enter the match as underdogs as they have a number of players who are suspended and others are injured and may not play. In terms of soccer status the Turks have only one notable accolade and that is their 2002 world cup semifinal appearance against Brazil which they lost by a 1-0.

The Germans however, enter the game as favorites to win the Euros and favorites to progress to the final on Sunday in Austria’s capital Vienna. The Germans have a full strength squad and after their performance against Portugal, many believe they will go all the way and repeat the famous Euro 96 triumph.

A Look at the teams

Germany

Unlike their opponents, the Germans have no injury concerns or suspensions ahead of their Euro 2008 semifinal. Coach Joachim Löw has a full complement of players available to meet the Crescent-Stars.

Possible Starting XI :Lehmann; Lahm, Mertesacker, Metzelder, Lahm; Schweinsteiger, Ballack, Frings/Rolfes, Podolski; Klose, Gomez.

Turkey

Tuncay Sanli, Arda Turan and Emre Asik are all suspended. Volkan Demirel, too, remains banned, even though Mehmet Aurelio will make a return. The Turks have injury problems as: Nihat Kahveci and Emre Gungor are definitely out, while Emre Belozoglu, Servet Cetin and Tumer Metin are doubtful. Third-choice goalkeeper Tolga Zengin maybe named as an outfield player.

Possible Starting XI: Rustu Recber; Altintop, Emre Asik, Gokhan Zan, Balta; Kazim-Richards, Aurelio, Tumer Metin, Karadeniz; Erding, Semih Senturk.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Germany

Michael Ballack: Ballack is Germany’s inspirational captain who leads from the front with his dominance in midfield. He will be a key player in midfield as he appears to be regaining form at a when Germany really needs him. He provides and scores and the Chelsea man will no doubt rise to the occasion to take his team into the Euro 2008 final.

Turkey

Gokhan Zan: The twenty six year old Besiktas defender will need to deliver a colossal performance similar to that of the match between Croatia if he hopes to be in the final in Vienna on Sunday. His experience will be an asset as he faces German forwards who are deadly in the air.

PREDICTION

In terms of physical presence in the penalty area and winning headers the Germans have proven to be very deadly and Portugal can attest to that fact. The Germans have the technical capability to dispose of the Turks but the Turks have proven to be more than just Euro 2008 participants and will no doubt think they can do one better that their accomplishments of world cup 2002. The Germans though will take it home but narrowly.

    2-1 germany is an academic guess, but the results f d tournament so far have bin anythng but..hard to see a handicapped turkey side leap this hurdle, but as we’ve seen before, all it takes is a little “fate” to send the turks thru…lol
