Euro 2008 Group C Matchday 2
Teams: Netherlands vs France
Date & Time: Friday 13 June 2008, 20:45 CET
Venue: Stade de Suisse Wankdorf, Berne, Switzerland
Match Official: Herbert Fandel (Germany)
Friday’s encounter between Group of death leaders the Netherlands and France is fascinatingly poised to be match that will be talked about for years to come and certainly worthy to be talked about now. A victory would see the Oranje’s booking a place in the knockout stages and would place France under extreme pressure; as to qualify for the knockout stages of Euro 2008, they would have to also beat the world champions Italy.
Group of death or Group of orange
After a breath taking performance to dispose of the world champions and pre-tournament favorites Italy, the Dutch will be looking for a repeat of their quick counter attacking passes to burst open a veteran French defensive unit that looks like the best part of their team.
Victory in their opening game against the world champions gives the Dutch a superb chance of progressing from the ‘Group of Death’. Victory over the French on Friday evening would ensure progression and would echo a loud silence in the world of football.
Surely the Dutch will be going for the jugular as soon as the whistle is blown and will feel quite confident they can dispatch the French after both team’s performance on Monday.
Les Bleus
With a flat performance on Monday against the Romanians, the French whoare tournament favorites did not look confident at all in attack. They lacked the creativity the world is so used to seeing from them. Even without the legendary Zinedine Zidane, France has enough depth in their team to win an important game.
Team captain and veteran Patrick Vieira will be back in midfield and should provide more decisive passes from midfield to the moving forwards. Vieira’s inclusion will also provide the dribblers in Henry, Benzema and Ribery with other options in attack. Another aspect of the French’s game that must be at its optimum on Friday is the willingness of Malouda and Ribery to take on defenders to provide space and opportunities for the forwards.
A look at the teams
Netherlands
With two of world soccer’s brightest young talent in Robin Van Persie and Arjen Robben almost back to full fitness, the Dutch have a fully complete squad to choose from.
There is only one Dutch doubt and that comes in the form of Arjen Robben. The Real Madrid winger is closing in on fitness and could play a part in the game coming from the bench.
Possible Starting Eleven: Van der Sar; Van Bronckhorst, Boulahrouz, Ooijer, Mathijsen; de Jong, Engelaar, van der Vaart, Sneijder, Kuyt; Van Nistlerooy
France
Both key players Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira were noticeably absent against Romania and both will play a vital part in the game if deemed fit. Henry should certainly return to the starting eleven however there are growing concerns over the fitness of Vieira.
Possible Starting Eleven: Coupet; Clerc, Abidal, Gallas, Thuram; Toulalan, Nasri, Makélélé, Ribéry; Henry, Benzema
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Netherlands
After a superb opening performance against Italy the Dutch will expect a repeat from Wesley Sneijder who will partner the ever present Ruud Van Nistlerooy in attack.
The Real Madrid striker has scored in 4 consecutive group matches in the finals of the European Championship and will aim to extend that record with another goal against France.
Van Nistlerooy is the man most likely to end France’s run of 5 international fixtures without losing a goal. Also with Robben passed fit for the monumental clash it’s hard to watch any one player.
France
The French was never looked potent in attack despite the presence of Ribery and Benzema on Monday will have the services of Thierry Henry which should give them a boost.
A back injury kept him out of the opener and with France up against it; Henry is the man who can provide the touch of magic to break the Oranje’s resistance.
Henry has scored 44 international goals in 100 matches, which is a remarkable record; however he has not yet scored against the Dutch. Friday is an ideal opportunity to do so and with the cohesion with himself Ribery and Benzema, it could be.
PREDICTION
With all that said what happens on Friday depends largely on the French’s willingness to win. If Domenech opts to play a defensive game, he will probably be up against it and needs to re-think his team strategy. A good defense starts with a good offence and with Henry back, the Dutch will be very cautious. Nonetheless the Dutch are in a miserable mood and Van Basten will be throwing everything at the French who must be vigilant.
A competitive game is expected and so the score line will be reflected as such. Chances will be created at both ends and whoever wins will be the team who converts the chances when they count.
Netherlands 1-2 France
