2010 World Cup: A Historical Moment for South Africa

October 27, 2008

Being a host nation for the prestigious World Cup tournament is among the dream of every nation involved with international soccer. Different countries bid hoping to be granted the right to host the event.

In the 2010 World Cup, there are five countries who have submitted their bid to host the event including Egypt, Libya, Morocco, South Africa and Tunisia.

Tunisia however withdraws their bid on May 8, 2004. Libya was also excluded in the bid process due to their decision not to allow any Israeli team to join the tournament in their motherland.

It was on May 15, 2004 in Switzerland when the envelope which contains the name of the winning country to host the 2010 World Cup was opened by Joseph Blatter, FIFA President. The winning nation has been announced and it was the turn of South Africa to host the event. South Africa received 14 votes which made them the winning country. It was a moment of glory for the South African people. That special day will be part of the history of South Africa as it was granted the honor to perform its duties and responsibilities to stage the biggest sporting event in the world.

Nelson Mandela who represents South Africa was present during the ceremony and was very happy with the result of the bid. The World Cup trophy was handed to him and had these words to say, “I feel like a young man of 15.” Mandela also sent out a very meaningful message to his countrymen by saying, “South Africans should treat this decision with humility and without arrogance because we are, after all, equal.”

As part of FIFA’s history, South Africa is the 16th country to host the World Cup tournament.
