The Rapid’s match against the New York Red Bull soccer team saw a spectacular hat trick from Sanna Nyassi when the two teams faced off each other on 20 July at the Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City Colorado. This was the Rapid’s fourth victory in the season starting 3-0-0. Nyassi who had so far scored only two goals in his MLS career, scored the first goal for the Rapids in the 2nd minute.
This was the second game running in which the Rapids had scored in the 2nd minute. In contrast to their 4-3 loss to the Seattle Sounders last week, this time they were able to maintain the tide of events in their favor. Wells Thompson topped the score in the 26th minute with Nyassi adding in the 31st minute to take the Rapids to a 3-0 lead against the Bulls by half time. Nyassi completed his hat trick with yet another goal just a minute after half time. Player Frank Rost who had recently been signed on to the Bulls as goal keeper was able to save only three of the seven shots directed at his net.
This was the team’s first hat trick since Casey’s in August 2009. Often deployed in the mid field Nyassi had played in the past only occasionally. Perceived as a small (at 5-8) but agile player, Nyassi proved too much for the Bulls when Coach Gary Smith sent him on to the field pairing him at forward with Omar Cummings who assisted him in all of the three goals. Thierry Henry made a valiant effort by scoring his league-topping 10th goal in the 67th minute but could not shore up the Bulls from the wide margin set by the Rapids.
