Benoît Costil to the rescue

One of the top goalkeepers of the weekend also may be one of France’s netminders on the rise. Benoît Costil, last season’s Ligue 2 Keeper of the Year, made five outstanding saves in Rennes’ upset over Marseille, denying subsitute Andre Pierre-Gignac on three separate occasions, while also saving clear-cut chances from Loic Remy and Alou Diarra.

Costil was wildly impressive at Sedan in past seasons, and Rennes saw a chance to bolster their domestic (and now Europa League) chances by signing him up. So far it’s paid huge dividends, and they will surely need the Caen native in order to put up good fights in those two competitions.

Can Frédéric Samaritano Help AC Ajaccio This Season?

AC Ajaccio spent five seasons in Ligue 2 before making their return to Ligue 1 this season, and while they should struggle to avoid the drop, they’re hoping they may have found a diamond in the rough to keep them going offensively.

That man is former Auxerre midfielder Frédéric Samaritano, who showed great promise in his late teens and early 20’s at Vannes before struggling to get consistent minutes with AJA. The 25-year old has four goals and an assist after going the full 90 in the sides first five matches. Johan Cavalli has looked good next to him in midfield this season as well, and if they can find an in-form striker to start carry the load in terms of goal scoring (much of those hopes being pinned on Brazilian Ilan), they might not just be a team to avoid the drop, but to do so comfortably and even finish in the top half of the table.
