Euro 2008 Pre-match Analysis: Croatia vs Turkey Live Online

June 20, 2008

Euro 2008 Quarter-Final
Teams: Croatia (1st Group B, 9/9pts) vs Turkey (2nd Group A, 6/9pts)
Date and Time: Friday 20 June 2008, 20:45 CET
Venue: Ernst Happel Stadion, Vienna, Austria
Match Official: Roberto Rosetti (Italy)

With only a few days to go before the Euro 2008 final in Austria on June 29 1998 world cup semi-finalist Croatia and 2002 world cup semi-finalist Turkey go head to head in what is expected to be a mouth watering clash of the dark horses of Euro 2008 in a quarter final match that will see either of them having the right to play Germany in a semi-final that promises to be explosive.

Perfect group stage

Croatia will come into the match as one of only three teams to have secured a 100% record in the competition thus far. Along with the Dutch and the Spanish they won all three of their group stage games, which included a well deserved 2-1 victory over the Germans. Their other victories coming by defeating co-hosts Austria by a 1-0 in their opener and 1-0 victory over Poland guaranteed maximum points.

The Croatians have only conceded a single goal in three matches, exemplifying the discipline required in defense and the potency of their slightly younger attacking players, who have scored four goals in the group stages.

Croatian coach Slaven Bilic and his men enter the game as favorites to progress to the semi-final stage of Euro 2008 and will be looking to return to the same stadium on June 29 for the final.

Miraculous group stage

Coach Fatih Terim’s team Turkey, had a very eventful group stage where they were defeated 2-0 by Portugal in the group’s opening game. They came within seconds of surrendering two points to co-hosts Switzerland in Basel in their second game, but Hakan Yakin - a Swiss but of Turkish parentage - opened the scoring midway through the first half, only for half-time substitute Semih Senturk to equalise and Arda Turan to get the winner at the very death.

It took a miraculous victory over the Czech Republic in Geneva to ensure qualification to the knockout stages for Turkey with a late gasped. Being two goals down with 15 minutes to go, another goal from Arda put the Turks back in it before Nihat Kahveci hit a quick double right at the death to take Turkey to the next round with a 3-2 victory over the Czechs. The Cresent Stars have shown commitment and tenacity and will have something to say against the Croats.

A look at the teams

Croatia

With qualification already assured, Croatia made nine changes for their last group fixture, which means they have an injury free team with depth. All nine of those rested could return for this vital fixture. Robert and Niko Kovac are both fit again, while Ivica Olic is looking increasingly likely to play.

Possible Starting XI: Peltikosa; Corluka, Robert Kovac, Simunic, Pranjic, Srna, Modric, Niko Kovac, Rakitic, Kranjcar, Olic/Petric.

Turkey

First choice goalkeeper Volkan Demirel is suspended for two games after a moment of indiscretion in their match against the Czechs. Rustu Recber, formally of Barcelona, should step in despite being in the winter of his life at 35 years old. Emre Gungor is out with a calf injury, while Tumer Metin, Servet Cetin and skipper Emre Belozoglu are all tentitive. Influential midfielder Mehmet Aurelio is also suspended.

Possible Starting XI: Rustu Recber; Hamit Altintop, Emre Asik, Gokhan Zan, Hakan Balta; Topal, Arda, Tumer, Tuncay; Nihat, Erding.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Croatia

Ivica Olic has been quietly proving himself on the international stage. Although he’s well over the 50 cap mark by now he’s arguably not received the recognition that he should have, but an exquiste goal against Germany has changed that. The Hamburg man is, according to the Castrol Index, he is the fastest player at Euro 2008 so far. If he recovers from his injury could prove a handful for the Turkish defense.

Turkey

Rustu Recber is one of the heroes of Turkey’s 2002 World Cup campaign, 35-year-old Rustu Recber hasn’t had much luck with the national side of late, but he returned to full first team action with Bestikas last season and will thus come into this game with a point to prove. Rustu could be the difference for Turkey with his experience in goal.

PREDICTION

In Euro ’96 the Croatians beat the Turks by 1-0 in their first on three meetings the others being friendlies in 1997 and 2004 where the matches were drawn 1-1 and 2-2 respectively. Turkey’s resilient attitude has served them well so far, but the Croatians have shown depth and know how.

Croatia 3-2 Turkey

Euro 2008 Prematch Analysis: Greece vs Spain Live Online

June 17, 2008

Euro 2008 Group D: Greece v Spain
Date and Time: 20:45 CET - Wednesday, June 18, 2008
Venue: Salzburg, Austria
Match Official: Howard Webb (England)

Training day

The Spanish who already qualified for the knockout stages of the competition on the weekend with a close 2-1 win over Sweden will be looking to finish at the top of the group with maximum points when they play the defending champions Greece who already been eliminated from Euro 2008 by virtue of losing their first two group games to Sweden and Russia respectively.

Tomorrow’s game will be much like a training game for both teams especially Spain who will rest key players ahead of their quarter final game against the runner’s up of the “Group of death”. It is no doubt Aragones will be using this game to fine tune his team for what is to be a difficult and decisive game on June 22 in Austria’s capital Vienna.

A Look at the teams

Greece

Rehhagel has also hinted he will start several second team players too with Giourkas Seitaridis and Vassilis Torosidis out, while Fanis Gekas has a fractured cheekbone and midfielder Giorgios Karagounis is doubtful. Alexandros Tziolis, Loukas Vintra, Nikos Spyropoulos and striker Dimitris Salpigidis are all set to come in. Antonis Nikopolidis is set to start, despite his mistake against Russia, because it will be his last game for his country.

Possible Starting XI: Not yet announced

Spain

Aragonés will play ten different starters from the first two games with Iniesta remaining because Cazorla is out. Pepe Reina will start ahead of Andrés Palop, although the Valencia-bound Sevilla goal-keeper could make an entrance in the second half. It will be a unique line-up with Sergio García partnering Dani Güiza up front and a strong performance from either could see them starting alongside Torres.

Possible Starting XI: Reina, Arbeloa, Navarro, Juanito, Albiol, Iniesta, Xabi Alonso, De la Red, Fàbregas, Sergio García, Güiza.

PREDICTION

The Greeks will want to end their Euro 2008 campaign on a high note and will try to keep things tight in defense while trying to test Spain’s defense. Whether the Spanish perform like they have been depends on how well the substitutes perform on the field, if indeed Aragonés starts his substitutes then they will look to cement a place in the starting team and impress him. This game is not expected to be a mouth watering clash but we could see players displaying their skills, even so Spain will annihilate Greece.

Spain 4-0 Greece

Euro 2008 Pre-match Analysis: Russia vs Sweden Live Online

June 17, 2008

Euro 2008 Group D, Matchday 3
Teams: Russia (3rd, 3/6pts) vs Sweden (2nd, 3/6pts)
Date and Time: Wednesday 18 June 2008, 20:45 CET
Venue: Tivoli-Neu Stadion, Innsbruck, Austria
Match Official: Frank de Bleeckere (BEL)

On the brink of qualification

The Swedes have not failed to qualify from a tournament’s opening stage in the last three attempts, their previous first round exit coming at Euro 2000 in Belgium and the Netherlands.

For Swedish coach Lars Lagerbäck, keeping this record going is priority number one. His mixture of youth and experience is so far on track, though, having picked up one win against Greece while suffering only the narrowest of defeats to Spain. Just a draw will see them past Russia, whose goal difference is inferior.

The Russians will need a win to qualify and with injury concerns added to the fact that Russia has only scored twice and conceded four times all in the same match against Spain. They were expected to beat Greece and they did but not convincingly. They won by 1-0 and Guus Hiddink’s men have not looked at all sharp in defense or creative enough to open up the Swedish defense.

A Look at the teams

Russia

Andrei Arshavin returns from suspension, although Coach Guus Hiddink is still undecided as to whether or not he wil include him in the lineup. Diniyar Bilyaletdinov is doubtful, although Yuri Zhirkov and Sergei Semak should shake off their respective knocks in time to make the match.

Possible Starting XI: Akinfeev; Anyukov, Kolodin, Ignashevich, Zhirkov; Torbinsky, Semak, Zyrianov, Saenko; Arshavin, Pavlyuchenko.

Sweden

Coach Lars Lagerbäck has pledged to put out his strongest possible team on the field, but Zlatan Ibrahimović is highly unlikely to last the full 90 minutes due to his knee injury. He may be used only as a substitute. Christian Wilhelmsson is out.

Possible Starting XI: Isaksson; Stoor, Mellberg, Hansson, Nilsson; Elmander, Svensson, Andersson, Ljungberg; Larsson, Rosenberg.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Russia

Andrei Arshavin: If he starts or comes off the bench, the long-serving Zenit St. Petersburg talent will surely be one of Russia’s main hopes to get the goal they so sorely need to move through to the next round. He’s netted three times during qualifying and will now hope for his first strike in Euro 2008, but against a defensive unit that seemed well organized against favorites Spain; it might be a task.

Sweden

Henrik Larsson: If Sweden lose here, it’s almost certainly Larsson’s final game in a Swedish shirt. As such the 36-year-old forward will need to use every ounce of his experience to help his team through to the knockout stages and with Ibrahimovic not fully fit he will need to be at his best.

PREDICTION

Sweden look to have done enough already, and an equalizing goal will see them through against a Russian side whose injuries and fitness concerns have ultimately proven to be their detriment. Sweden showed organization against Spain and should they play with the same level of urgency they will be in the knockout stages of Euro 2008.

Russia 1-2 Sweden

Euro 2008 Pre-match Analysis: Netherlands vs Romania Live Online

June 16, 2008

European Championship group C, Matchday 3
Teams: Netherlands vs. Romania
Date and Time: Tuesday, June 17, 2008, 20:45 CET
Venue: “De Suisse”, Wankdorf, Bern, Switzerland
Match Official: Massimo Busacca (Switzerland)

Possibility of Qualification

Romania faces the possibility of qualification to the knockout stages of Euro 2008 when they face a Dutch team who are already quarter finalist with wins against world champions Italy and France in their previous games. Romania can book their place in the quarter final pending a victory against a Dutch team that has looked very impressive with emphatic wins in their two group games.

Should Romania qualify for the knockout stages of Euro 2008; France and world champions Italy will find themselves facing elimination from the competition. And with speculation surrounding the game tomorrow, one thing is for sure; the Dutch will not take any prisoners and the Romanians have openly said they are not looking for any favors from the Dutch.

The Dutch, who will rest key first team players, will start the game with a team consisting of mostly players from the bench and could find themselves with the shock of being defeated.

A Look at the teams

Netherlands

With no injury or suspension concerns for Marco Van Basten, the Dutch will have a full strength team at his disposal. He will probably feature most of the players on the bench. However, it is unclear as to whether Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben will make the starting XI or not play at all.

Possible Starting XI (4-5-1): Ed van der Sar – Khalid Boulahrouz (Mario Melchiot), Heitinga, Joris Mathijsen (Fred Bouma), Gio van Bronckhorst (Tim de Cler / Fred Bouma) – Demy de Zeeuw, Ollie Engelaar, Rafael van der Vaart (Ibi Afellay), Dirk Kuyt (Van Persie), Wes Sneijder (Robben) – Huntelaar.

Romania

The versatile defensive midfielder Mirel Rădoi has been ruled out for the rest of the tournament after breaking his nose against Italy, while his Steaua teammate Dorin Goian, who scored the only goal the last time Romania and Holland met, is suspended.

Possible Starting XI (4-5-1): Bogdan Lobonţ – Cosmin Contra, Gabriel Tamaş, Chivu, Răzvan Raţ – Paul Codrea, Florentin Petre, Mutu, Răzvan Cociş, Bănel Nicoliţă – Daniel Niculae.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Netherlands

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar
The highly-rated striker could have his chance to shine in this game after not spending a single minute on the field in the previous two games. Despite his contract with Ajax not expiring before mid-2010, he could complete one of the most high-profile transfers of this summer to almost any major European club he would wish for.

Romania

Adrian Mutu
The brightest star in the current Romanian team and their true leader, the player a whole country is looking up to in hope of European success. Neither a playmaker nor a striker, despite his 140 career strikes, he spent time with seven different clubs. Romania will be looking to him to provide them with the inspiration they need to qualify.

PREDICTION

A game that might come down to the Romanians throwing everything in attack to get the goal that might see them through to the knockout stages; they will be advised to be cautious as the Dutch have been known for their quick and smooth counter attacks. Whoever plays for the Dutch will give it 100% and will want to cement their place in the first team. A competitive game is Dutch will come away with the victory to make it a flawless 3 in a row.

Holland 2-1 Romania

Euro 2008 Pre-match Analysis: Italy vs France Live Online

June 16, 2008

European Championships, Group C
Teams: Italy (3rd, 1pt) vs France (4th, 1pt)
Date and Time: Tuesday 17 June 2008, 20:45 CET
Venue: Letzigrund Stadion, Zürich

On the brink of elimination

The Azzurri and Les Bleus are both on the brink of elimination from the group stages of Euro 2008, with both teams booked as possible favorites for Euro 2008, neither has lived up to their expectations. As such neither team thought qualification for the knockout stages of Euro 2008 would be up to a repeat of the Euro 2000 final.

If the Romanians beat Holland who have already qualified in the other match in the group, then the result in the Italy-France match would be irrelevant as neither would qualify.

With neither the world champions nor the French assured a spot in the quarter final, winning tomorrow’s game must be the last chance for either team, who have looked a shadow of themselves throughout the competition. Both teams however, have been plagued by injury to key players ahead of their opening matches and will feel that this may have affected their team performance.

France will feel confident they can beat the world champions having beaten them 3-0 in qualifying and drawn the return tie 1-1.

A Look at the teams

Italy

Roberto Donadoni made five changes for the Romanian game, and it is possible he will make changes to the team for the repeat of world cup 2006 final with France. The two players who seem certain to be dropped are Andrea Pirlo and Alessandro Del Piero, with Antonio Cassano definitely coming in for the latter. Even though it is a speculative move to drop Pirlo, Coach Donadoni may be trying fresh tactics, but with no one to replace Pirlo, he could start.

Possible Starting XI: Buffon; Zambrotta, Panucci, Chiellini, Grosso; Camoranesi, Pirlo, De Rossi, Aquilani; Cassano, Toni

France

Raymond Domenech could make some changes following a disastrous 4-1 thumping by Holland. Veteran defender Lilian Thuram could be axed but will probably be saved, while Samir Nasri is being tipped to return to the side to support veteran striker Thierry Henry. Patrick Vieira may play his first game of Euro 2008 if he can prove he is fit following his thigh injury, but he is still a doubt. William Gallas will start despite an ankle injury.

Possible Starting XI: Coupet; Sagnol, Thuram, Gallas, Evra; Ribery, Makelele, Toulalan, Malouda; Nasri, Henry

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Italy

Luca Toni: Has failed to make his mark on Euro 2008, but he was incredibly unlucky not to hit the back of the net during the draw with Romania, having a valid goal wrongly disallowed, and also seeing a header miraculously saved by Bogdan Lobont. If any Italian is to score against France surely it will be Toni.

France

Franck Ribery: Like his Bayern Munich team-mate and friend Toni, Ribery has also not really shone at the Euros but his class is without question. The only real creative force in the French team, Ribery must lead from the front. The pressure will be on Ribery as he aims to keep the French in Euro 2008.

PREDICTION

Games between the French and the Italians are always close encounters, and although both need to go for the win, these two teams know each other quite well and the possibility of a draw cannot be ruled out. However if the scores are level late in the game, and both know that a win will be enough to take them through, there could be chances as men are thrown forward in search of a goal. Neither wants to be eliminated and so it will come down to the team who wants it more, the Italians have not shown that they are ready for Euro 2008, nor has the French but the French will be victorious.

Italy 1-2 France

Exit with dignity-as Swiss defeat Portugal

June 16, 2008

In a game that saw most of the substitutes from the Portuguese team getting a taste of Euro 2008 against co-hosts Switzerland in a game that was basically a training game for the Portuguese who was already assured a place in the knockout stage of the competition.

The Swiss team started strongly and was justly rewarded by winning 2-0, but it was a case of too little, too late as the co-hosts bowed out of Euro 2008 on a high note. Allbeit the victory was against Portugal’s second team, who rested some keyfirst team players ahead of their quarter final game.

Portugal will face the runner up of the “Group of Death” which will be decided on June 17. Can Portugal win Euro 2008? The fans and well wishers await their fate as they prepare to cross another hurdle in Euro 2008. Is this Cristiano Ronaldo’s Euro cup?

Winner goes to Knockout Stage

This is a classical case of winner takes all, with both teams having an equal opportunity to qualify along with Portugal for the quarter final stages of Euro 2008. Things are so evenly balanced between the Czechs and the Turks that this match could very well go into extra time.

The Czechs possess a team that is relatively good on the European stage, but not since the glory days of the mid 90s have they truly been a force to be reckoned with.
Still, the last tournament in Portugal saw them reach the semi-finals – an accomplishment that, while inferior to their Euro’96 final appearance certainly beat their uneventful exit at Euro 2000.

The Turks, of course, have only twice before taken part in a European Championship, and only on one of those occasions did they manage to make it through the group stages.

That was in 2000, when they fell at the quarter-final stage to none other than Portugal, one of their last standing rivals.

As such, the Turks definitely have something to prove in this contest, but if they are to do so they will need to beat a Czech team that seems confident they can eliminate the Turks. Both teams must come out to play their best brand of football if either hopes to be in the knockout stage.

A Look at the teams

Czech Republic

The team is injury free and with victory on the agenda, Milan Baros and Jan Koller could form an alliance in the forward line, which means a midfielder will be sacrificed.

Starting XI: Not yet announced

Turkey

An unchanged starting team is expected to be named with Emre out and Gokhan Zan and Servet Cetin remain likely to miss the encounter.

Starting XI: Not yet announced

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Czech Republic

Libor Sionko: Sionko of FC Copenhagen appears to have hit form at exactly the right time. He got the equalizer against Portugal. A futile goal but no doubt he will be confident in a game that they must win to put off the trip home. He will need to score more than once.

Turkey

Arda Turan: The 21-year-old winger sealed Turkey’s win over Switzerland in the very last minute, but that wasn’t all. He also provides a great deal of energy and commitment for his team. The Galatasaray player will be looking to create chances for his teammates and may get a vital goal in what must be the most important game he will play.

PREDICTION

The Czechs based on their form are favorites for this one, but the match is interesting in that neither side has exactly displayed discipline in defense. Both have scored twice and conceded three times. It will be a very physical game which could see a Euro 2008 red card, but the game will be over at the end of regulation time; with the Czechs victorious.

Czech Republic 3-2 Turkey

Euro 2008 Pre-match Analysis: Switzerland vs Portugal Live Online

June 14, 2008

Euro 2008, Group A, Match day 3
Teams: Switzerland (4th, 0pts), Portugal (1st, 6pts)
Date and Time: Sunday, June 15 (2045 CET)
Venue: St Jakob Park, Basel
Match Official: Konrad Plautz

No Surprise
As all the games in Group A comes to a close. It has been entertaining but not all surprising, as everyone expected Portugal to be at the top of the group. Interestingly, all the teams in this group have played very good football and even co-hosts Switzerland have had their moments when they looked quite threatening. It was a very valiant effort by the Swiss who must surely be planning for world cup qualification at this point.

Portugal, meanwhile, have done exactly what was expected of them and picked up two wins out of two games. They were really made to fight for both their results, but had the capability to snatch victory at crunch time. So with the Swiss to play in their final group game; Scholari must be thinking maximum points in order to play a mouth watering quarter final against the Runner up of Group C will could possibly be France, Italy or Romania.

A Look at the teams
Switzerland

Unless Köbi Kuhn decides to give some his second string a run-out in this game of academic interest; he will use the same line-up for the Swiss, as Kuhn is hoping to register the first ever Swiss win at a European Championship. Eren Derdiyok, who impressed against Turkey, may be the third Swiss striker to be ruled out with injury along with captain and all-time leading scorer and Marco Streller.

Possible starting XI (4-4-1-1): Benaglio - Lichtsteiner, Muller, Senderos, Magnin - Behrami, Inler, Fernandes, Barnetta - Yakin - Derdiyok

Portugal

There are no injuries to report from the Portugese camp, but Scolari is may rest key players in the likes of Simao, Deco and Ronaldo. Which will be vital players in their quarter final game against the runner up of group C which has not been decided yet; one thing is for sure whoever they play it will be a difficult game.

Possible starting XI (4-5-1): Ricardo - Bosingwa, Pepe, Carvalho, Ferreira - Quaresma, Moutinho, Petit, Deco, Ronaldo - Nuno Gomes

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Switzerland
Behrami

The Lazio wing-back has been Switzerland’s best player at the tournament. He is sure to have attracted enough interest in the first two games, and knowing this will be his last, we could yet see him at his best up against Portugal’s makeshift Paulo Ferreira, who showed he’s uncomfortable against powerful running when up against Libor Sionko earlier in the week. This should be a match up.

Portugal
Quaresma

Also picked for the last game - in which he only appeared as a late, tap-in scoring substitute - but will be the one to watch in this game for identical reasons. Far more likely to start with Ronaldo facing the possibility of being rested, and he will be eager to showcase his skills as a move away from Porto to one of Europe’s elite looks inevitable.

PREDICTION

It is likely to be an open game full of positive energy for two sides who already know their fate and will be able to play with a degree of freedom. Portugal has epth on their bench in attack and even with Deco and Ronaldo out should take care of the Swiss with relative ease.

Switzerland 1-3 Portugal

The Oranges -Les Bleus feel the Bleus

June 14, 2008

The French team was given a lesson in soccer yessterday when they were whipped 4-1 by a Dutch team that looks simply unbeatable. With the Oranje’s beating two of Euro 2008 favorites, it’s safe to say that they are now one of the favorites of the competition and face the prospects of a place in Vienna, Austria on June 29.

The “group of death” has not lived up to its expectation of being the most difficult group in Euro 2008, instead it has seemed like a one sided affair with the Dutch dominating. The world champions and the mighty French are not playing the brand of football that the world has grown accustom to seeing them play and one would have thought based on previous form that both nations would be head to head for first place in the group.

Robbed by injury certainly all the teams in the group has had problems with injury to key players but the most noticeable being the injuries to players in the French and Italian teams. However, both teams have depth and quality players that should be able to fill any gaps that arise in the team.
The problem I think is the coaching and similarly both France and Italy have coaches that have been heavily criticized for their tactics. This in itself has proven that both coaches make decisions that may or may affect the players and the way they play on the field. I think you will agree that neither France nor Italy have played their natural game.

The French does not possess the attacking creativity has wee have grown used to seeing when they go forward or the fluid transition from defense to attack. They are missing the Great Zidane, who for so long has been their “go to” guy when they needed inspiration and so we clearly that a player like Zidane cannot be replaced. Karim Benzema has not lived up to the expectations placed on him, could it be that he is not one for the big occasion?

The Italians need Del Piero and Totti and the inspirational Cannavaro on the field at the same time and with Gattuso and Pirlo in midfield they would simply be gigantic on the field.
So with both France and Italy on 1 point from 2 games and Romania on 2 points, the stage is set for a repeat of the 2006 World cup final as France and Italy do battle for a possible place in the knockout stages of Euro 2008 on June 17.

Euro 2008 Pre-match Analysis: Greece vs Russia Live Online

June 13, 2008

European Championship, Group D, Match-day 2
Teams: Greece vs. Russia
Date and Time: Saturday, June 14, 2008, 20:45 CET
Venue: Wals-Siezenheim, Austria
Match Official: Roberto Rosett

Ties between the two nations have traditionally been strong, mostly on terms of history and religion. But mutual respect and appreciation will be put aside in this Euro 2008 encounter, as either Greece or Russia will be out of the tournament with another defeat.

Defending Champions Disappointing

The Greeks won Euro 2004 by defeating host Portugal in the final and France in the quarter final stages both by the same score line 1-0, but Euro 2008 has been a very disappointing attempt to defend their title.

With a defeat in their opening game against Sweden, the defending champions are really up against it and the added pressure of their fans who expects another Cinderella tournament will be bitterly disappointed at their showing so far. Victory is a must for the defending champions in a game that will be very decisive.

A Look at the teams

Greece

Rehhagel is tipped to change his line-up, but nothing dramatic is expected. He will certainly have to do without the injured Kostas Halkias, who’s just completed a rare move across town from Aris Thessalonikis to bitter rivals PAOK. Alexandros Tzorvas, on loan from Panathinaikos to OFI, will be the stand-in goalkeeper, with Nikopolidis once again between the sticks.

The three-man midfield will most likely to remain unchanged; some alterations are anticipated in defense though. Paraskevas Antzas, who was the surprise inclusion in the starting XI against the Swedes, is highly doubtful with a calf strain and Yourkas Seitaridis is struggling to shake off a groin injury. Versatile Hristos Patsatzoglou of Olympiakos Pirea could replace either of them if deemed necessary.

Possible Starting XI (4-3-3): Nikopolidis – Seitaridis (Patsatzoglou / Loukas Vyntra), Sotiris Kyrgiakos, Traianos Dellas, Vasilis Torosidis – Kostas Katsouranis, Basinas, Yorgos Karagounis – Angelos Haristeas, Nikos Lyberopoulos (Salpiggidis / Fanis Gekas), Yorgos Samaras (Amanatidis).

Russia

Deprived of the UEFA Cup joint top scorer Pavel Pogrebnyak even before the final phase began, Hiddink may now have to do without his replacement Roman Pavlyuchenko, the Spartak Moscow’s centre forward, who scored in all three of his last international appearances; is a major doubt due to a leg injury.

Possible Starting XI (4-3-3): Akinfeev – Aleksandr Anyukov, Aleksei Berezutskiy (Ignashevich), Vasily Berezutskiy, Yuri Zhirkov – Sergey Semak, Konstantin Zyryanov, Igor Semshov – Dmitri Sychev, Diniyar Bilyatletdinov, Pavlyuchenko (Roman Adamov).

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Greece – Angelos Haristeas

One of the most well known Greek footballers, and not only for scoring three invaluable goals in the 2004 final phase, including that headed winner in the final against Portugal. The former Aris Thessalonikis youth graduate has been playin abroad for the past six years, enjoying considerable success in both Germany and Holland.

He has scored more times on international level than any other active Greek player, 18 in 66 caps, and at 28 he has every chance of breaking the all-time high of 29 goals scored by Nikos Anastopoulos.

Russia – Yuri Zhirkov

Perhaps Russia’s MVP against Spain, he’s expected to put Greece’s right -sided players to the test on Saturday. Fast and skillful, he’s playing as a defender with the national side, although actually a left midfielder – if not a winger. At 24 he’s already tasted success in the UEFA Cup with CSKA Moscow, scoring the all-important second goal in the 3-1 2004-’05 final victory over Sporting Lisbon. He also won the award for the best European Champions League goal of the 2006-’07 campaign, when he netted in a 3-2 loss at HSV.
PREDICTIONS

Both teams will be cautious following their opening day losses and this game promises tension and drama, as only a victory will do for either of them. Russia seems to be favorites, as it remains uncertain whether the defending champions will have sufficient time to regroup after a disastrous showing against Sweden.

Greece – Russia 1-2
