Uruguay win record 15th Copa America

July 25, 2011 by · Comments Off

Uruguay played a very spirited match against their South American rivals Paraguay during an exciting finale to the 43rd edition of the Copa America at the Estadio Monumetal in Buenos Aires on 24 July 2011. Uruguayans fans enthusiastically cheered on their team with their nations’ flags dotted all over the stadium as Luis Suarez scored the first goal in the 12th minute taking his team to an early lead.

Suarez who plays at forward for Uruguay was ideally placed for a corner shot that was deflected as his teammates were tackling the Paraguayan defense in midfield. But it was Diego Forlan’s two goals, one in the 41st minute (his first goal in 13 international matches) and the other just at the end of the match in the 90th minute that took his team to a clean 3-0 victory against the Paraguayan side. Forlan’s latest goal was his 31st for Uruguay, tying with former Uruguayan star Hector Scarone for the highest number of goals for the national team. Also, the match was a record 82nd cap for the Atletico Marid striker. Remarkably for Paraguay, they have concluded the South American Championship as runners up without having scored in any of the matches.

For Uruguay, this was their record 15th final at the South American Championship. A smaller South American nation of only 3.3 million, Uruguay have performed well in significant tournaments recently. They are one of the region’s top four teams and no. 18 in the FIFA rankings overall. Earlier they had beaten the likes of Argentina to reach their 15th win in 16 years (the last was won in 1995), one less than hosts Argentina. This is only the second time in history that neither Argentina nor Brazil made it to the semi finals in which at least one of them participated. In this instance, we can say that history repeats itself as the first edition of the oldest soccer championship in the world was also won by Uruguay in Buenos Aires in 1916. Last night’s historic grants La Celeste, as the Uruguayan team are called, a seat at the FIFA Confederations Cup to be held in Brazil in 2013.

Uruguay are favorites to win the 43rd edition of the Copa America, the final of which is set to take place between them and Paraguay at the Mendoza stadium in Buenos Aires on 24 July 2011. Uruguay scored 2-0 in the semifinal at La Plata to edge past Peru who were aspiring to obtain their third continental trophy since their second ever win way back in 1975. Luis Suarez scored for his side in the 53rd and 58th minutes to take his team to the final of the South American championship after a gap of nearly 16 years.

Peru 0-2 Uruguay – Highlights (Semi Finals | Copa America)

Uruguay has already won the Copa America a record 14 times and this will be their 15th final. After qualifying last year to be placed at the bottom of Group C, Peru did not stand much of a chance in their tense semifinal against the more successful Uruguayan side. Having come thus far was good enough for the fledgling team that had beaten the likes of Brazil to help their nation enter the semi final of the tournament after a gap of nearly 14 years. Nevertheless, they have been one of the surprise finds of this year’s South American Championship. They went bravely into the semi final despite missing top two forwards Jefferson Farfan and Claudio Pizzaro who were eventually replaced by Paolo Guerroro and Juan Vargas.

Uruguay had also faced their set back with the suspension of Diego Perez who was red carded in their match against Argentina on 16 July plus the injuries of Edinson Cavani and Mauricio Victorino also had the two players ruled out of Wednesday’s game. However, Walter Gargano soon filled in for Perez while Sebastian Coates who had already played two matches in the tournament replaced Victorino. Now the Uruguayans are pitted against Paraguay for the finale with both sides having defeated the likes of Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela.

Paraguay 0-0(5-3) Venezuela – Highlights (Copa America | Semi Finals)

Uruguay will be fighting Paraguay for the Copa America on Sunday after the latter defeated Venezuela in the second semi final on 19 July 2011. Paraguay which hasn’t won any of its five matches in the tournament so far advanced to its first final since 1979 after beating Venezuela in a goalless tie and a 5-3 victory on penalties. Venezuela were so close to reaching their first final in the Copa America but were unable to score despite hitting the post twice in extra time and getting into straight striking opportunities later on in the penalty shootout. Paraguayan goalie Justo Villar made a significant save in the penalty kicks when Franklin Lucena’s low shot was caught by him in the third spot. Villar has already played a valuable role for Paraguay when he helped his team oust Brazil from the competition with timely saves during regulation and extra time and then stopping a penalty in the subsequent shootout.

Brazil defeats Ecuador 4-2

July 15, 2011 by · Comments Off

Brazil defeated Ecuador 4-2 to finish at the top of Group B at the Copa America on Wednesday and is all set for the quarterfinal against Paraguay on 18 July 2011. Alexandre Pato and Neymar scored two goals each to take their team to a much needed victory. Venezuela placed second in the group will meet the Chile in San Juan.

The other quarter-finals will be played between Argentina against Uruguay and Colombia against Peru. As title-holders and winners of four of the last five tournaments, Brazil already had a 2-2 draw in the group stage with Paraguay, who have proceeded to the quarterfinals along with Peru as one of the two best third-placed teams. La Tri’s Felipe Caicedo scored two goals for his side in a lively and well attended match that ended the group stage games at the Copa America tonight.

Venezuela had earlier mounted a remarkable late comeback to snatch a 3-3 draw against Paraguay in Salta on 14 July. After an uneventful opening half-hour, Brazil fired things up with at the Mario Alberto Kempes stadium with a precise header goal by Pato from André Santos’s cross. Eight minutes later, Robinho attempted another goal but the shot from Maicon’s cross hit goalie Marcelo Elizaga’s left-hand post. In fact at the other end, less than a minute later, top Ecuadorian striker Caicedo found chance to shoot from the edge of the box to beat goal keeper Júlio César for an equalizer in the 36th minute. Ecuador had another chance to shoot a goal in the first half had it not been for Brazil goalkeeper’s daring save of a left-footed shot from the right by Michael Arroyo.

Brazil soon gained the upper hand four minutes into the second half when Paulo Henrique Ganso passed the ball onto Neymar who scored in the top corner. But this did not deter Caicedo who hit the second equalizer just before the hour when teammate Christian Noboa passed the ball from midfield to the top striker. But Pato put Brazil in the lead again two minutes later netting the pass from Neymar and bringing his team’s score to 4-2 against Ecuador in the 72nd minute. In the 90th minute, Robinho did score but the goal was ruled an offside and replays show that there was no offside and the goal was valid.

Copa America: Update

July 14, 2011 by · Comments Off

The 43rd edition of the Copa America is approaching the quarterfinals as the group games steadily draw to their close. The much awaited quarterfinals will start from July 16 until July 17 with two games each. The semi-finals will commence from July 19 until July 20. Third place teams will compete on July 23 whereas the final is set for the 24th in Buenos Aires. Meanwhile, Chile is set to face Peru on 13 July for a place in the quarter finals. Chile has a promising track record against Peru. They have beaten Peru twice by two goals in each match and have scored more goals overall against Peru. Recently, they won two out of five international matches & drew the rest, same as Peru. But Chile has scored more goals overall. Of note is that Chile’s last 13 matches 11 have been with clean sheets.

This is made possible by a strong midfield trio of Fierro, Estrada, Jimenez and forwards Suazo and Paredes whereas Juan Vargas & Paolo Guerrero are used to add sharpness and pace to the game. A huge Chilean presence is anticipated at Cordoba with 30,000 fans from across the border with the nearby western city of Mendoza. Coach Borghi’s strategy will also be important. If he intends to draw he’ll use defensive midfielders, if victory then Matias Fernandez or Jorge Valdivia. Both teams will proceed to the quarter finals if they draw.
