Goal scorers: Man United (Smalling, 8; Nani, 37; Rooney, 45) Chelsea (Torres, 46)

Bookings:

Man United: Fletcher, Valencia

Chelsea: Terry, Cole, Ramires

Man of the Match: Nani

Manchester United cemented their position at the top of the Premier league after brushing aside Chelsea at Old Trafford. The Champions who have been in imperious form off late put three goals past a Chelsea defence that is known for not giving away goals.

Chelsea started the game brightly and had chances to score early in the match. United keeper David De Gea was called into action early as he saved a Ramires shot that was goal bound. Chelsea were made to pay for their missed chances very soon as Smalling headed home an Ashley Young free-kick to give Manchester United the lead after 8 minutes. Nani who was brilliant for the Red Devils scored United’s second with a thunder bolt that flew past Chelsea keeper Petr Cech. The inform Rooney struck at the stroke of half time when Terry’s clearance fell in his path and he scored from close range.

Chelsea manager Andre Vilas Boas introduced Nicholas Anelka for Frank Lampard in the second half and the substitution worked immediately as Anleka’s through ball played in Torres who made no mistake in chipping the ball over the diving De Gea into the back of the net. Manchester United were awarded a penalty on 55 minutes when Nani was brought down in the box by Jose Bosingwa but Rooney was unable to convert the penalty.

Fernando Torres could have brought Chelsea back into the game when he was sent clean through on goal but after having rounded the keeper he somehow managed to put his shot wide.

The win meant that Manchester United remain top of the table with their 100% percent winning record in the season still intact. Chelsea are now 5 points behind United and even this early it is looking like a one-horse race for the Premiership title.

Manchester United had a fantastic outing last time out against Bolton whom they dispatched easily scoring 5 goals in the process. The Red Devils face Chelsea next who themselves are on a bit of a run. Chelsea beat Sunderland in their last Premier League match and looked much more confident.

United have been in scintillating form and have scored 18 goals so far in their 4 matches. Rooney has been prolific in front of goal and is in scoring for fun at the moment. Chelsea on the other hand have been good value for their performances and have been eking out results by playing some good football.

The games between these two sides are always very feisty and we are in for a treat this week too as the two clubs look set to outwit their opponents. Rooney would want to score another hat-trick to make it a hat-trick of hat-tricks this season while Chelsea will look towards the misfiring Torres to finally put his hand up and show the goal scoring touch that he showed with Liverpool in his first season in the Premier League.

Chelsea are coming on the back of a win in the Champions League against Bayern Leverkusen while United only managed a draw against Benfica. Both managers will want their teams to throw everything at the opponents to gain the advantage in the title race.

Chelsea manager Andre Vilas Boas has a fit squad to choose from while United will be without the services of Tom Cleverly who suffered a broken leg in the game against Bolton last week.

Manchester United are the favourites for the game but Chelsea can be very dangerous on their day and can easily beat the Champions if they play to their potential.

Final Score: Sunderland 1-2 Chelsea

Goal scorers: Sunderland (Dong-Wong Ji, 90) Chelsea (Terry, 18; Sturridge, 51)

Bookings:

Sunderland: Colback

Chelsea: Bosingwa

Man of the Match: Raul Meireles

Chelsea continued their pursuit of the two Manchester clubs by a fine away victory at the Stadium of Light defeating Sunderland with ease. Goals from John terry and Daniel Sturridge were enough to win Chelsea the game despite the late consolation goal scored by Dong-Wong Ji.

Chelsea played the better football and put pressure on a Sunderland side that was without their influential striker Asamoah Gyan who had been loaned out to Al-Ain in a bizarre fashion. Chelsea pressed away from the start of the game and managed to get ahead with a goal from a very unlikely source. John Terry scored from a very tight angle when Sunderland were unable to clear their lines after a free kick. Sturridge doubled Chelsea’s advantage with an improvised back heel that went in to the back of the net despite Wes Brown trying to hack it away from goal.

Dong-Wong Ji scored in the last minutes of the game to give the score line a more dignified look but Sunderland were really very poor in the game and failed to exert any kind of pressure on the Chelsea back four.

Raul Meireles was the star of the show for Chelsea who bossed the midfield and passed the ball with complete precision and poise. It was his through ball that led to the Sturridge goal. Sunderland have to regroup after the departure of Gyan and would have to come back strongly after a series of bad results.

Sunderland have been poor and have not been able to get a win so far. Sunderland were held to a draw by Swansea last time so they would like a win from somewhere. However, the chances of Sunderland getting a win are slim as Chelsea pay a visit to the Stadium of Light fresh from their comfortable win against Norwich in their last fixture

Mata- Chelsea's creative outlet

Chelsea have had a slow start to the season drawing their first match but have since started playing better. Chelsea would like to give start to their new acquisition Raul Meireles in midfield while Sunderland are likely to give a start to their loan acquisition from Arsenal, Nicklas Bendtner .

Chelsea manager Andre Vilas Boas still has his first choice goalkeeper Petr Cech out of contention and Michael Essien too is sidelined due to injury. Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan got injured on international duty with Ghana and is in a race to get fit to face Chelsea.

Chelsea must win the game in order to keep the pressure on the two Manchester clubs at the top. Sunderland would happy with a draw from this game as they get their campaign back on track.

Chelsea vs. Norwich City Preview |EPL| Sat, 27 Aug, 2011

Chelsea have a relatively easy clash against Norwich City at Stamford Park. Chelsea dispatched West Brom at home last week while Norwich have drawn both their games.

Chelsea were held to a 0-0 draw by Stoke while West Brom gave them a run for their money as Chelsea only scraped through with a 2-1 victory.

Norwich have played some good football but were denied a victory by Kenwyne Jones in their last fixture against Stoke as Jones scored an injury time equalizer.

Chelsea have some key players missing in Essien, Luiz and Cech while Norwich have injury concerns of their own with Daniel Ayala, Ward and Vaughan are on the side-lines.

Juan Mata- Chelsea’s new signing- won’t be able to start but may appear on the bench. Oriol Romeu is also expected to appear on the bench.

Chelsea would be looking to make short work of Norwich while Lambert’s side would look to stun the Blues fans.

Chelsea vs. West Brom Preview |EPL| Sat, 20 Aug, 2011

August 19, 2011 by · Comments Off

Chelsea manager Villas Boas first home assignment is Roy Hodgson’s determined West Brom. Chelsea looked the better team against Stoke last weekend but weren’t able to break down a strong Stoke defence. West Brom were impressive against reigning champions Manchester United but were unlucky to concede a late goal at the Hawthorns.

Who will play?

Chelsea thrashed West Brom at Stamford Bridge with a 6-0 victory and Roy Hodgson would be rallying his troops to avenge the defeat this time around. Chelsea manager has selection headaches as he would be in a dilemma about who to start from the trio of Fernando Torres, Didier Drogba and Nicholas Anelka. All three players are naturally gifted and it would be tough choice for the Portuguese tactician.

Chelsea have some injury concerns as Oriol Romeu, Michael Essien, Cech, David Luiz and Sturridge all won’t be able to play while West Brom’s top scorer last season Peter Odemwingie is set to miss out along side Jerome Thomas. Villas Boas would like nothing more to gain the approval of the Blues fans with a convincing win against the Baggies while West Brom would be looking to keep the scoreline respectable.

Chelsea begin their campaign with a tough away trip to the Brittania stadium. Chelsea have been widely tipped to give Manchester United a tough fight for the Premier League title after the arrival of young Portuguese coach Andre Vilas Boas. Villas BoasStoke City’s manager Tony Pulis has been shrewd in the transfer market and has picked up two very experienced centre backs- Woodgate and Upson- on free. Stoke showed promise last season with a 13th place finish and would look to build on last season.

Chelsea haven’t signed any big names as the club had already bought Torres for around 50 million pounds this January. The club has brought in defensive midfielder Oriel Romeu from Barca and have almost completed a deal for young striker Romelu Lukaku.

Stoke City’s main strength has been their ability to keep hold of key players and once again, Stoke has kept hold of important players like Huth, Shawcross and Jones. The club has also drafted in experience in the form of Upson and Woodgate.

Oriel Romeu is set to make his debut for the club as Essien picked up a knee injury while Higginbotham and Fuller would miss the game for Stoke.

Chelsea may not have added any big names this summer, their squad is yet one of the most experienced in the whole of Europe. Boas would want a perfect start at his new club while Tony Pulis would like to welcome Boas to the PL with the baptism of fire!

Chelsea 2011-12 Preview-Title hopes- fact or fiction

Chelsea finished 2nd last season, a massive 9 points behind Champion Manchester United. They would want to get back to winning ways and would want to mount a serious title challenge this season.

Star Man: John Terry

John Terry is the most dependable player for Chelsea and has been an ever present figure in the Chelsea defense which has given so very little away in the past many seasons. He will again be required to lay the foundations of a title winning campaign this season.

One to Watch: David Luiz

David Luiz, the Brazilian centre back was one of the stalwarts of the Chelsea defense last season. The way he quickly adapted to the rough and tough game of the Premier League was admirable for all. He would have to continue his superb form in the coming season to cement his place in the Chelsea lineup.

Manager: Andre Villas Boas

Can he imitate Mourinho's success?

The new Chelsea manager Andre Villas Boas has many expectations to live up to at Chelsea. He will have to quickly deliver or he will also have to bear the same fate as Anchelotti.

Ins:

Oriol Romeu (£ 4,350,000 from Barcelona-Defensive Midfielder)

OUTs:

Yuri Zhirkov (Undisclosed to Anzhi Makhachkala)

Michael Mancienne (Undisclosed to Hamburg)

Likely Top Scorer:

Didier Drogba has been the most prolific goal scorer for the club for the last many seasons. He will again be the front runner to become the top goal scorer for the club considering the poor form of Fernando Torres.

Possible Best XI:

Cech, Bosingwa, David Luiz, Terry, Ashley Cole, Essien, Lampard, Ramires, Malouda, Drogba, Torres

Predicted Finish: 3rd

Birmingham frustrate Chelsea with a Draw

December 28, 2009 by · Comments Off

Chelsea the Premier League leaders could not score past Birmingham’s heroic Joe Hart goalkeeper and now will be without strikers Salomon Kalou Didier and Drogba for the next month in a series of games that could break their bid to get the title from Manchester United. Drogba and Kalou is leaving for African Nations Cup on Monday and Ancelotti’s faith in rookie striker Daniel Sturridge appeared dim as the former Manchester City youngster blundered his lines against Birmingham.

The Italian’s agonizing day dropped further deeper as Florent Malouda was sent off for a second bookable offence. At least Nicolas Anelka is anticipated to return for Chelsea’s next game against Fulham but Ancelotti’s lack of powerful offense was glaring against Alex McLeish’s side, who have now on a eight games winning streak. Hart helped Birmingham to produce a great performance and frustrated the visitors, who slip-up a chance to make a greater lead at the top over United.
