Abete Bans Italian Fans from Purchasing Tickets for Away Matches
October 27, 2008
As the battle heats up for the qualifier matches for the World Cup, untoward incidents happen involving soccer fans. A similar incident happened on Saturday when some Italian fans set on flame a Bulgarian flag during a qualifying match held in Sofia. The Italian fans involved were immediately arrested by police authorities.
Earlier before the match commenced, Italian hooligans have been reported provoking fights just outside the stadium. These hooligans are believed to be from the right wing group.
To control the situation and prevent such incidents, Giancarlo Abete, President of the Italian Football Federation announced the immediate ban of Italian fans from purchasing tickets of any away matches. The ban will remain in effect until there are no direct orders in lifting the ban.
Abete said in an interview, “From today we will stop asking for tickets for our supporters for away matches as long as we don’t have any guarantees or ways of verifying who buys the tickets.”
